Requesting Custom Orders and Commissions
In addition to a full selection of products in our store, we also take custom orders and commissions. This guide will give you everything you need to know to request custom work! Be sure to check out our gallery and our social media accounts to see our latest work.
Our store offers a wide variety of woodworking products. Our products range from typical woodworking items such as cutting boards and charcuterie boards in different shapes and sizes, to kids games and a large selection of badge reels and refrigerator magnets. Any of the products in the store are pre-made if they are listed as in stock. This means anything in stock is ready to ship same day or next day. If personalization is desired, then a few extra days are required for proof approval and completion. See the Personalize Everything blog post for more detail on that specific process.
Any modification to an existing product, like a larger size of cutting board, different wood pattern, etc. is considered a custom request. We also build furniture: dining tables, outdoor signs, night stands, floating shelves, etc. We will consider any commission large or small—even things as small as cake toppers or keychains. Use the contact form as designate it is a “custom furniture inquiry” or “custom product inquiry”. Please give as much detail about the request as possible. Please include rough dimensions, type of wood preferred, as well as any picture you may have that would be helpful.
Here is an example:
“Hello, I am looking for a quote for a dining table. I have attached some pictures I have found online that are similar to what I would like. Ideally I would like it to seat 6 people (2 on each side, 1 on each end). I’m open to the wood species but I’m looking for something lighter and more natural looking, perhaps white oak. For the dimensions, I think something 3’ x 5’ is adequate although up to 6’ is possible for our space. Please include a price for both sizes.”
We have a full shop of specialized machines that will be utilized to create high quality furniture and custom pieces. No request is too large or toosmall!
Payment
We make every effort to stay within a customer’s budget. Our preference is to keep it natural although we understand the cost limitations of premium materials. We want customers to be aware of the difference between real walnut hardwood versus poplar stained to look like walnut. Each will yield an entirely different look, each at different price points, and longevity. We won’t be judgy about it but believe it’s important to educate the client so they will be able to make an informed decision on their build.
Payments for custom commissions are handled through invoicing. After the design is finalized and the quote has been approved, an invoice will be sent to the customer. The invoice will have the build details and dimensions for clarification. It is important to ensure that is correct. A 50% deposit is required to be placed in the work queue for larger items over $100. The deposit is 100% refundable up until the project has started and the materials are purchased. The materials are purchased at the start of the build. Design modifications after invoicing will likely result in a price change. Upon completion, the remaining balance is due at pickup, arranged delivery, or after installation (if required) through the same invoice.
Turn Around Time
The expected completion time frame varies on the scale of the project and other orders currently in the queue. However, the expected start date and build time will be communicated. Please understand both times are subject to delay. Absolute due dates will try to be accommodated but not promised. Keeping current product inventory stocked for the online store stocked is a priority as the inventory is required for craft fairs and other in person events in the community, as well. Typically, the online inventory is kept in stock by batching out large production runs which allows time in between for custom commissions.
When multiple products are out of stock in the online store, join the waitlist so we will know which item should be prioritized next.
Guarantee
All products we produce are fully backed by customer satisfaction guarantee. We want all customers to be happy about the products made by The Fine Grainery. Wood is an imperfect medium however. Sometimes it will crack or warp. We only use kiln dried wood to limit this effect, but defects can happen. We will make an effort to first repair, and then replace if a repair isn’t possible.
